Apiary

Reading time: about 3 minutes

We are a couple of a chinese-speaking environmental scientist and a beer-brewing software developer.

In our spare time we provide a home to and care for a few hundred thousand honey bees. We strive for the best welfare possible of our bees. This is why we continuously improve our skills by increasing knowledge and adjusting our mode of operation.

Location

This section is currently not up to date since we moved away from Markdorf. Please stay tuned. We are working on a new description of our bee's location.

The hives are placed in the midst of an organic orchard with trees carrying apples, pears, cherries, quinces and plums. The ground is strewn with dandelions and other flowers. Futhermore, blackberries and blackthorns grow wildly at the boundary.

The the south there is a small forest nearby. To the west of the beehives the nature-sanctuary "Eisweiher" is located and in the east the city with its diversified gardens and balconies is within the bee's reach.

All of this serves our bees to eventually create a fine composition: our honey.

Bees

Our bees are a country breed, mainly originating from the Carniolian honey bee (apis mellifera carnica). We raise queens ourselves and primarily select them for meekness.

Recently we grew fond of the Buckfast bee (Wikipedia).

Not only we deeply admire the work of Brother Adam who developed this breed, first and foremost we expect them to be less disposed to swarm which would save us really a lot of work.

By the way, Brother Adam based his work on the work of Professor Ludwig Armbruster (Wikipedia, German only) who was born in Markdorf. Mr. Armbruster was an outstanding bee scientis and an honourable human being who saved the lives of 100 jews during WW II.
